How to clean grapes to remove pesticides and to keep fresh longer

Here’s a simple method to clean grapes, remove pesticides, and help them stay fresh longer:

Ingredients:

  • Grapes (any variety)
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar (white or apple cider)
  • Cold water

Instructions:

  1. Remove Grapes from Stem: Start by removing the grapes from the stem, discarding any grapes that are soft, shriveled, or moldy.
  2. Prepare a Cleaning Solution:
    • In a large bowl or clean sink, add cold water.
    • Add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and 1 tablespoon of vinegar to the water. These two ingredients help break down pesticide residues, dirt, and bacteria.
  3. Soak the Grapes: Submerge the grapes in the solution. Let them soak for about 5-10 minutes. The baking soda will help loosen pesticides, while the vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant.
  4. Gently Scrub (Optional): If you want to ensure thorough cleaning, you can gently rub each grape using your hands. For extra dirty grapes, a soft-bristled brush can help.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly: After soaking, drain the grapes and rinse them well under cold running water to remove any residue from the cleaning solution.
  6. Dry the Grapes: Lay the grapes out on a clean kitchen towel or paper towels to air-dry. Pat them dry with a towel to speed up the process.
  7. Store Grapes:
    • Transfer the clean, dry grapes to an airtight container lined with paper towels.
    • Place the container in the refrigerator. The paper towels will absorb any moisture, keeping the grapes fresh longer.

Tip for Freshness:

  • Do not wash grapes until you are ready to eat them. Washing them too early can cause them to spoil faster. If you wash them ahead of time, make sure they are thoroughly dried before storage.

This method ensures your grapes are clean, pesticide-free, and stay fresh for an extended period.
