His expected position as the No. 2 seed, second only to Alexander Zverev, would have marked his seventh appearance in the Mexican Open, an event where he has been a consistent participant since the onset of his career.
Fritz’s history with the Mexican Open has been notably impressive. The year 2020 saw him finishing as a runner-up to Rafael Nadal in the Acapulco final. Moreover, just two years prior, he had made it to the semifinal round. However, his seventh rendezvous with the event won’t be materializing this year.
In an Instagram post, the 2024 US Open runner-up expressed his disappointment over having to withdraw from the tournament. He shared, “I’ve been dealing with an abdominal injury since the week before Dallas.” Fritz had been hoping for an improvement in his condition, given that multiple aspects of his game remained unaffected by the injury.
However, the situation has not seen any positive growth, leading to a great deal of frustration for the tennis star. Fritz noted that his performance was being hampered, as he was unable to give his best on the court. The injury forced him to avoid certain shots and alter his usual style of play to dodge the pain.
Despite this setback, Fritz remains optimistic about his recovery. He’s apologized to the tournament and expressed hope that a period of rest and rehabilitation would help him regain his full strength.

Following his loss in the third round of the Australian Open and his subsequent return in Dallas, he criticized the balls used in the Australian tournament as “the deadest ever.” He went on to blame these balls for an oblique injury he suffered.
Fritz’s decision to participate in the home tournaments in Dallas and Delray Beach, despite his injury, did not fare well for him. His performance was lackluster, with a record of only 2 wins out of 4 matches.
