Freshness-Tested Farm Fresh Egg Recipe

Introduction

“I often buy fresh eggs from the farm, but I always want to check whether they’re fresh or not. I’ve tried many methods and finally found easy hacks to tell if an egg is fresh or rotten.”

How to Test Egg Freshness

  1. Water Test:
    • Fill a bowl with water.
    • Gently place the egg in the water.
    • Fresh Egg: Sinks to the bottom and lays flat on its side.
    • Less Fresh but Edible: Stands upright on the bottom.
    • Rotten Egg: Floats to the top. Discard it.
  2. Shake Test:
    • Hold the egg close to your ear and shake it gently.
    • Fresh Egg: Little to no sound.
    • Rotten Egg: Sloshing sound due to a larger air pocket inside.
  3. Sniff Test:
    • Crack the egg open into a bowl.
    • Fresh Egg: Neutral or no noticeable smell.
    • Rotten Egg: Unpleasant, sulfur-like odor.

Recipe: Fresh Farm Egg Shakshuka

Ingredients:

  • 6 fresh farm eggs
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder (optional)
  • 1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Feta cheese, crumbled (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Sauce:
    • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Add chopped onion and red bell pepper. Sauté until soft and translucent (about 5-7 minutes).
    • Add minced garlic, ground cumin, paprika, ground coriander, and chili powder. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Cook the Tomatoes:
    • Pour in the crushed tomatoes. Stir to combine.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly.
  3. Add the Eggs:
    • Make small wells in the sauce using the back of a spoon.
    • Crack the fresh farm eggs one at a time into a small bowl to ensure freshness, then gently slide each egg into a well in the sauce.
  4. Cook the Eggs:
    • Cover the skillet and cook until the egg whites are set but the yolks are still runny (about 5-8 minutes). For firmer yolks, cook a few minutes longer.
  5. Garnish and Serve:
    • Remove the skillet from the heat.
    • Sprinkle with fresh chopped parsley and crumbled feta cheese if using.
    • Serve hot with crusty bread or pita for dipping.
