Recipe: Banana Phloem Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 ripe bananas (brown-spotted for extra nutrients)
  • 1 cup milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Ice cubes (optional)
  • A handful of spinach (optional, for added nutrients)
  • Phloem bundles (the tiny strings from the bananas)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Bananas:
    • Peel the bananas and set aside the peels. Carefully remove the phloem bundles (the tiny strings) from the bananas. These strings are rich in nutrients like potassium, fiber, vitamin A, and vitamin B6, so we will include them in our smoothie.
  2. Blend the Ingredients:
    • In a blender, add the peeled bananas, phloem bundles, milk, honey or maple syrup (if using), cinnamon, vanilla extract, and ice cubes (if desired). If you want an extra nutrient boost, add a handful of spinach.
  3. Blend Until Smooth:
    • Blend all the ingredients until smooth and creamy. If the smoothie is too thick, add more milk to reach your desired consistency.
  4. Serve:
    • Pour the smoothie into glasses and enjoy immediately. The phloem bundles may add a slight texture, but they are completely edible and packed with nutrients.
  5. Optional Garnish:
    • Garnish with a slice of banana or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top for an extra touch.

Benefits:

  • This smoothie is not only delicious but also packed with nutrients. The use of ripe, brown-spotted bananas ensures a sweeter taste and provides health benefits, such as cancer-fighting properties and blood pressure control. The phloem bundles contribute additional fiber and vitamins, making this a highly nutritious drink.

Enjoy your Banana Phloem Smoothie and the benefits of the often-overlooked phloem bundles! 🍌
