Legendary Stuffed Grape Leaves Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 30 fresh grape leaves (or jarred grape leaves)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh herbs (parsley, dill, mint)
  • 1 medium onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Optional: Chopped nuts or raisins

Method:

  1. Prepare the Grape Leaves:
    • For jarred leaves: Rinse under cold water to remove excess brine.
    • For fresh leaves: Blanch in boiling water for a few seconds until soft, then drain and set aside.
  2. Make the Filling:
    • In a mixing bowl, combine cooked rice, onions, garlic, fresh herbs, olive oil, and lemon juice.
    • Season with salt and pepper to taste. If desired, add chopped nuts or raisins for extra texture and flavor.
    • Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  3. Assemble the Grape Leaves:
    • Lay a grape leaf shiny side down, with the stem towards you. Trim off the stem.
    • Place a small amount of filling near the stem end. Fold in the sides and roll the leaf tightly into a small parcel, similar to a cigar.
    • Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
  4. Cook the Stuffed Grape Leaves:
    • Arrange the stuffed leaves tightly in layers in a pot.
    • Add enough water to just cover the grape leaves. Squeeze additional lemon juice over the top and drizzle with olive oil.
    • Place a heatproof plate on top of the leaves to keep them submerged.
    • Bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 40-50 minutes, until the leaves are tender.
  5. Serve:
    • Once cooked, allow the grape leaves to cool slightly. Serve them warm or at room temperature, garnished with additional lemon wedges if desired. Enjoy your legendary stuffed grape leaves!
