Homemade Gulab Jal (Rose Water)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup fresh rose petals (preferably organic)
  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon of salt (optional, helps with preservation)

Instructions:

  1. Preparation:
    • Gently rinse the rose petals to remove any dirt or impurities.
    • Pat them dry with a clean towel.
  2. Extraction:
    • Place the rose petals in a heat-resistant bowl or saucepan.
    • Pour the distilled water over the petals.
    • Place the bowl or saucepan on a stove and heat it gently. Make sure the water does not boil; it should only be warm to help release the fragrance from the petals.
  3. Simmering:
    • Cover the bowl or saucepan with a lid or aluminum foil.
    • Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 30-45 minutes. The steam will condense and infuse the water with the rose essence.
  4. Cooling and Straining:
    • Remove the bowl or saucepan from heat and let it cool completely.
    • Strain the rose petals from the water using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
  5. Storing:
    • If using salt for preservation, stir it into the rose water.
    • Transfer the rose water into a clean, airtight bottle or jar.
    • Store it in a cool, dark place. It can be kept in the refrigerator for extended freshness.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, fragrant roses for the best results.
  • You can adjust the amount of rose petals and water based on your preference for fragrance strength.
  • If you prefer a more concentrated rose water, you can reduce the amount of water used.
