Coca-Cola and Eggshell Experiment

Ingredients:

  • 1 can of Coca-Cola
  • 1 eggshell (from a hard-boiled egg, washed and dried)

Equipment:

  • A spoon or stirring stick

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Eggshell:
    • Wash the eggshell thoroughly to remove any residue. Let it dry completely.
  2. Pour the Coca-Cola:
    • Open the can of Coca-Cola and pour it into the container.
  3. Add the Eggshell:
    • Carefully place the eggshell into the container with the Coca-Cola.
  4. Observation:
    • Watch what happens! You may notice bubbles forming around the eggshell, and over time, the eggshell may start to dissolve or change appearance.
  5. Wait and See:
    • Let the mixture sit for a few hours, or even overnight, and observe any changes to the eggshell.

What’s Happening?

The Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid, which can react with the calcium carbonate in the eggshell. This reaction produces carbon dioxide gas, which you might see as bubbles. Over time, the acid can dissolve the eggshell, leaving behind a soft, rubbery membrane.
