DIY Weekly Mattress Disinfectant Spray

This natural disinfectant spray is a great way to keep your mattress fresh and free of dust mites and bacteria with a weekly spritzing. It’s also gentle enough for most mattress types.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups distilled water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar (distilled is preferred)
  • 20 drops tea tree oil (optional – has additional antibacterial properties)
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil (optional – for a calming scent)
  • Spray bottle

Method:

  1. Combine all ingredients: Add the distilled water, white vinegar, and essential oils (if using) to your spray bottle. It’s best to use a glass spray bottle for this recipe, but plastic will also work.
  2. Shake well: Give the spray bottle a good shake to combine everything.
  3. Lightly mist the mattress: Once a week, lightly mist the surface of your mattress with the spray. Avoid drenching the mattress, a light misting is sufficient.
  4. Air dry: Open a window and allow the mattress to air dry completely before remaking the bed. This may take a few hours depending on the climate.

Tips:

  • Test in an inconspicuous area: Before spraying the entire mattress, test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area to check for any discoloration.
  • Spot clean stains: For tougher stains, you can use one of the cleaning methods you mentioned (baking soda paste, dish soap solution) before using the disinfectant spray.
  • Vacuum after drying: Once the mattress is completely dry, vacuum it thoroughly to remove any dust mites or debris loosened by the spray.
  • Not for memory foam: Avoid using this spray on memory foam mattresses. The vinegar can break down the material. Opt for airing out the mattress and sprinkling baking soda on the surface instead.

Safety Precautions:

  • Keep the spray out of reach of children and pets.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • Open windows for ventilation while using the spray.

This natural disinfectant spray is a simple and effective way to keep your mattress clean and fresh. With regular use, you can create a healthier sleep environment for yourself.
