Don’t Bug Out! Naturally Repel Flies & Roaches with this DIY Floor Wash

Flies buzzing around your fruit bowl? Cockroaches giving you the creepy crawlies? Don’t reach for the harsh chemicals just yet! This natural floor wash recipe utilizes the power of essential oils to repel those pesky insects while leaving your home smelling fresh and inviting.

What you’ll need:

  • Gallon bucket
  • Hot water
  • White vinegar (distilled is preferred)
  • Liquid Castile soap (for suds, choose a gentle, unscented brand)
  • Essential oils of your choice (see recommendations below)
  • Tea tree oil (optional, for an extra germ-fighting boost)
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Essential Oil Options (choose one or combine a few):

  • Peppermint: Repels flies, ants, and spiders with its minty freshness.
  • Citronella: A classic mosquito repellent, also effective against flies and roaches.
  • Lavender: Discourages flies and roaches while offering a calming aroma.
  • Cedarwood: A natural insect repellent with a woody scent.
  • Lemongrass: Known for its anti-bacterial properties and repelling flies and mosquitoes.

Instructions:

  1. Fill your bucket with hot water.
  2. Add ½ cup of white vinegar. Vinegar is a natural disinfectant and deodorizer.
  3. Pour in ¼ cup of liquid Castile soap. This will help create suds for a more effective clean.
  4. Here comes the fun part! Add 10-15 drops of your chosen essential oil(s).
  5. (Optional) For an extra germ-fighting punch, add 5 drops of tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant, but be cautious as it can irritate skin.
  6. Stir the mixture well to combine.

Mopping Magic:

  1. Dip your mop into the bucket and wring it out thoroughly. You want the mop damp, not soaking wet, to avoid damaging your floors.
  2. Mop your floors as usual.
  3. Stand back and admire your sparkling clean floors and the fresh, bug-repellent scent!

Tips:

  • Always dilute essential oils before using them. They are very concentrated and can irritate skin.
  • Test the floor wash in an inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t discolor your flooring.
  • Store leftover floor wash in a labeled, airtight container in a cool, dark place.
  • Refresh the scent by adding a few more drops of essential oil when mopping again.

Repeat this process weekly for continuous pest deterrence and a naturally clean, fragrant home!

Safety Note: Keep essential oils out of reach of children and pets.

Enjoy your pest-free haven!
