Garlic Broth Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 5 cloves of garlic, peeled
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 large onion, quartered
  • 2 carrots, roughly chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, roughly chopped
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
  • Salt to taste
  • Optional: fresh herbs (such as thyme, parsley, or rosemary)

Instructions:

  1. Boil the Garlic:
    • In a large pot, add the peeled garlic cloves and water.
    • Bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  2. Add Vegetables and Seasonings:
    • Once the water reaches a boil, add the onion, carrots, celery, bay leaf, and black peppercorns to the pot.
    • If using, add fresh herbs for additional flavor.
  3. Simmer:
    • Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture simmer for about 30-40 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together and the garlic to soften.
  4. Season:
    • Add salt to taste. Start with a teaspoon and adjust as needed.
  5. Strain (Optional):
    • If you prefer a clear broth, strain the vegetables and solids from the liquid using a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth. You can also blend everything together for a thicker consistency.
  6. Serve or Store:
    • The garlic broth can be enjoyed on its own as a warm, soothing drink, or it can be used as a base for soups, stews, or other dishes.

Uses:

  • As a Soup Base: Use the broth as a flavorful base for soups and stews, adding additional vegetables, proteins, and grains as desired.
  • For Cooking Grains: Cook rice, quinoa, or other grains in the garlic broth instead of water for added flavor.
  • As a Warm Drink: Sip the warm broth to soothe a sore throat or as a comforting drink on cold days.
  • In Sauces and Gravies: Use the broth to deglaze pans or as a base for sauces and gravies.

This garlic broth, with its aromatic and soothing properties, is a versatile and nourishing addition to winter cooking, perfect for warding off the chill and adding a healthy boost to meals.
