Lemon Peel Cleaner Recipe

Ingredients:

  • Peels from 3-4 lemons
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (optional, for extra cleaning power)
  • A plastic bottle with a spray nozzle

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Lemon Peels:
    • Collect the peels from 3-4 lemons. If you have a vegetable peeler, you can use it to get just the zest (outer peel) without too much of the bitter white pith.
  2. Combine Ingredients:
    • Place the lemon peels in the plastic bottle.
    • Pour in 1 cup of white vinegar. The vinegar acts as a natural disinfectant and helps to dissolve the oils from the lemon peels.
    • Add 1 cup of water to the bottle.
    • If desired, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda for additional cleaning power. Be careful, as adding baking soda will cause a fizzy reaction with the vinegar, so do this step slowly.
  3. Infuse:
    • Close the bottle tightly and shake it gently to mix the ingredients.
    • Let the mixture sit for at least 24 hours, or up to a week for a more potent cleaner. This allows the lemon peels to infuse their oils and scent into the vinegar.
  4. Strain and Use:
    • After the infusion period, strain out the lemon peels from the liquid using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.
    • Pour the liquid back into the plastic bottle or another spray bottle.
  5. Clean:
    • Your homemade lemon peel cleaner is now ready to use! Spray it onto surfaces and wipe with a clean cloth. It works well on countertops, sinks, and other surfaces. Just be cautious with natural stone surfaces like granite, as the acidity might affect them over time.

Tips:

  • For Extra Scent: You can add a few drops of essential oil (like lemon or lavender) to boost the fragrance.
  • Storage: Store the cleaner in a cool, dark place. Shake well before each use.
  • Avoid: Do not use this cleaner on delicate surfaces or surfaces that are sensitive to acidic cleaners.

This Lemon Peel Cleaner is a fantastic way to utilize those leftover peels and keep your home smelling fresh while being eco-friendly!
