Golf influencer Paige Spiranac recently revisited the painful memories of her professional golf debut at the 2015 Dubai Ladies Masters. Speaking on the Quiet Please! podcast, Spiranac addressed longstanding rumors about how she received an invitation to the prestigious tournament and the backlash she faced from fellow competitors.
A Challenging Start to Pro Golf
Spiranac, who graduated from San Diego State and turned professional in August 2015, gained rapid popularity on social media for her eye-catching golf content. Her online fame led to speculation that she was invited to the Dubai Ladies Masters based on her social media presence rather than her playing ability.
During the podcast, co-host Mel Reid, a professional golfer on the Ladies European Tour (LET), asked Spiranac about her experience at the event. Without hesitation, Spiranac described it as “the worst moment of my life.”
“I’ll never forget that,” she admitted, recalling the intense scrutiny she faced from both the media and her fellow golfers.
False Rumors and Harsh Reception
Spiranac revealed that false rumors swirled around the tournament, with some players cruelly suggesting she had done “sexual favors” to secure her spot in the event. The baseless accusations added to the already immense pressure she was feeling.
“I ended up going viral, and this was back when people weren’t going viral all the time. I didn’t know how to handle it, and my whole life got flipped upside down,” she shared. “I went from having 500 followers to 100,000 followers overnight.”
Initially told that her participation in the Dubai Ladies Masters would be a low-profile opportunity to gain experience, Spiranac was shocked to find herself in the spotlight. She was unprepared for the media frenzy that surrounded her, spending hours doing press interviews before even stepping onto the course.
“I had no training to do this. And I would say there were a couple of girls who were really supportive and nice, but the majority—it was brutal,” Spiranac recalled. “I would go on the range, and girls would just scatter. No one wanted to hit next to me.”
Overcoming the Adversity
Despite the harsh reception and overwhelming scrutiny, Spiranac persevered. While she did not have a long career as a professional golfer, she has since found incredible success as a golf personality, influencer, and advocate for growing the sport.
