Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
- 1 quart water
- 1 teaspoon mild liquid soap (optional)
Equipment:
- Medium saucepan
- Fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth
- Spray bottle
Instructions:
- Prepare the Cinnamon Solution:
- In a medium saucepan, bring 1 quart of water to a gentle boil.
- Add 2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon to the boiling water.
- Stir the mixture well to ensure the cinnamon is fully incorporated into the water.
- Simmer and Infuse:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the cinnamon water simmer for about 10 minutes. This allows the cinnamon to infuse into the water effectively.
- After 10 minutes, turn off the heat and let the mixture cool to room temperature.
- Strain the Solution:
- Once the mixture has cooled, use a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth to strain the cinnamon solution into a clean bowl or container. This step removes any solid particles, ensuring the solution is smooth and ready for spraying.
- Optional: Add Liquid Soap:
- If you want to enhance the effectiveness of the spray, add 1 teaspoon of mild liquid soap to the strained solution. The soap helps the solution adhere better to the plants and soil.
- Transfer to Spray Bottle:
- Pour the strained and cooled cinnamon solution into a spray bottle for easy application.
- Application:
- Shake the spray bottle gently before each use.
- Spray the cinnamon solution directly onto the soil surface and the base of your plants where fungus gnats are commonly found. Be sure to target areas where adult gnats are likely to lay eggs.
- For best results, apply the cinnamon spray every few days until the fungus gnat population is under control.
Notes:
- Cinnamon acts as a natural fungicide and can help control the growth of fungi that attract fungus gnats. Additionally, the strong scent of cinnamon can deter adult gnats from laying eggs.
- This homemade cinnamon spray is safe for most plants and can be used as a preventive measure to keep fungus gnats at bay.
