World No. 1 Iga Swiatek made a triumphant start to her Olympic campaign despite the challenging weather conditions.
The French Open champion battled through a rain-interrupted match to defeat Irina-Camelia Begu in the first round. Playing under the roof of Court Philippe Chatrier, Swiatek showcased her dominance, securing a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
While the top seed expressed relief at advancing, she also acknowledged the added pressure of playing at the Olympics: “I’m happy to get through. The atmosphere was a little bit different so I was a little more nervous,” she said.
The persistent rain wreaked havoc on the schedule, with numerous matches postponed or canceled. Despite the disruptions, Swiatek’s victory provided a much-needed highlight for tennis fans.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the Polish star as she aims to add an Olympic gold medal to her impressive trophy cabinet.
